The Broad-leaved pepper tree (Schinus terebinthifolius) is an extremely prolific invasive tree in our catchment, the red seeds are easily distributed through our waterways and by birds. Broad-leaved pepper tree is a restricted invasive plant under the Biosecurity Act 2014. It must not be given away, sold, or released into the environment without a permit. The tree can also affect human health with its toxic resin that can cause persistent swelling, rashes, welts and haemorrhages in the eyes, the pollen can also cause respiratory difficulty. We don’t just take out invasive species because they’re not natural, sometimes they are a risk to animals and our health.

Lantana camara is one prickly customer that we deal with but we think this is a great way to decimate it. We used a hedge trimmer to clip our way through the hedge and open the access to their crowns, then it’s a simple cut and paste job. This was much quicker than hacking away with a machete or just trying to crawl through to the crown.
Climbing asparagus vine (Asparagus africanus), this vine suffocates trees and shrubs that it grows near, this one has been growing around our mangroves and native cock-spur. The best way to get rid of these vines is to dig out their crown and hang off the ground. The good news is that fresh thick sprouts like this are a good snack while you are working. Please be careful, the vine is very spiky.
