In September, with held the first Community Butterfly Survey of the 2025-26 season in collaboration with Brisbane’s Big Butterfly Count. Despite overcast conditions, a dedicated group of butterfly enthusiasts gathered at Archerfield Wetlands for the survey. While the forecasted rain didn’t arrive, the heavy cloud cover made for less-than-ideal conditions for butterfly activity.
Participants enjoyed a pleasant walk through the wetlands and recognised the site’s strong ecological potential, even though sightings were limited. Confirmed species included the Monarch (Danaus plexippus), Meadow Argus (Junonia villida), Common Grass-blue (Zizina otis), and Dainty Grass-blue (Zizula hylax). Possible but unconfirmed sightings included the Lesser Wanderer (Danaus petilia) and Chequered Swallowtail (Papilio demoleus).
A special thanks to Cliff Meyer for his guidance, and to all attendees for making the event enjoyable. We are looking forward to the next survey under (hopefully) sunnier conditions.
If you want to join us for the next survey at the Oxley Creek Common on Saturday 11th October, you can sign up here.
