On October 19, 28 volunteers joined us at Kendall and Lawson St Park in Oxley to help remove litter and debris from Oxley Creek. Over 3 hours, 540 kg of debris was removed from the waterway by Ocean Crusaders and the most amazing group of paddle-powered volunteers.
This event was part of Brisbane Catchment Networks ‘Clean Up Brisbane River’ project funded through the Queensland Government’s Community Sustainability Action grants program and allowed us to kayak and canoe our way along the creek, removing 20 tyres, 4 wheelie bins, assorted bottles, balls, polystyrene and even a gas cylinder.
We have now been partnering with Ocean Crusaders for 4 years to host waterway and land-based clean up events along Oxley Creek. This support has allowed us to remove a mammoth 29 tonnes of rubbish from our waterway. This staggering amount reflects the impact of both flooding and illegal dumping on our catchment.
