OCCA has once again joined forces with the great team at Ocean Crusaders for a waterway clean-up along the Oxley Creek.
The clean-up took place over two days, on day one Ocean Crusaders and their dedicate volunteers conducted a ‘hardcore clean’ collecting large rubbish items, including 13 tyres, using their specialist barge. On day two, the community rallied together for a successful Paddle Against Plastic event, launching from the Kendall Street Canoe Ramp, Oxley. The volunteers put in a remarkable effort collecting even more tyres and a shopping trolley, as well as bags of plastic bottles and lots of other small rubbish items.
Over the two days, there were 36 enthusiastic and hard-working volunteers including 11 scouts from Victor Scouts, Holland Park, and an incredible 1,320kg of rubbish was removed from this beautiful creek.
Keen to Paddle Against Plastic? We will be hosting another Paddle Against Plastic on the Oxley Creek in April 2025, so keep an eye out for further details through the newsletter and on our social media.
This event was made possible by funding from a Brisbane City Council Lord Mayors Environment Grant.
On Sunday 17 November, we are hosting another event with Ocean Crusaders, this time a land-based clean-up at a particularly concerning dumping hotspot along the creek. For full details of this event head to the Ocean Crusaders Eventbrite.
