Australia Post / Landcare Australia Community Development Grant

Introducing Shoop the Sugar Glider!

A wonderful Australia Post Landcare grant has allowed Shoop the Sugar Glider to come to life to spread our environmental message to the wider community, The grant has paid for the production of a full-sized sugar glider costume created by talented designer Marion Hoad. OCCA will take Shoop to schools and community festivals to educate community about conservation and the need to look after our local wildlife – in particular, the plight of the sugar glider. Sure to be a great hit with both kids and adults, Shoop will make its debut at the 2008 Peaks to Points Festival. Watch out for it!

The Australian Post Sugar Glider Mascot is a great way to show people just how intricate and amazing these creatures are so keep an eye out for Shoop around the catchment

Gambling Community Benefit Fund

The Queensland Government established the Gambling Community Benefit Fund (GCBF) in 1994 to provide funding to community groups in Queensland.

In 2005 the GCBF came to our assistance in replacing the Creekcare team’s stolen trailer as well as providing funds for equipment vital to the running of the catchment centre. Some of the items included:

  • Replacement trailer for the Creekcare team
  • Post-hole borer
  • Sidewinder
  • New computers
  • Computer networking hardware
  • Binding machine
  • Computer software
  • Printer
  • Blinds for the office
  • Quickspray unit for our Biodiversity Services Unit

The GCGF’s help has been invaluable to the continuing operation of OCCA.

  • Support for our Waterwatch Program
  • Redesign and online publication of our Library Catalogue (available February 2006)
  • Rural Residential Workshops
  • Rehabilitation of areas in Spring Mountain Wetlands Reserve

Their support in sharing GIS knowledge and resources with our communications officer has also been a boon to OCCA.
