Peaks to Points Festival 2008

The official P2P program is now out! The Peaks to Points Festival celebrates the diverse natural environment of greater Brisbane’s southern region, from the dramatic heights of Flinders Peak near Ipswich, to the tranquil waters of Moreton Bay. The Festival aims to raise awareness of this special area and showcase the activities of local community and environmental groups working to improve the environment, through a program of interactive and fun-filled events. Plant ID Workshop - Cliveden Ave Reserve

The first in OCCA’s 2008 series of Plant ID Workshops. Join David Sparks at the Cliveden Avenue Reserve (Oxley Creek end of Cliveden Avenue) for a fun and informative morning. Whether you are a beginner or an expert, you’re sure to have a great time on this plant ID day

What to plant in Francis Outlook?

Join Councillor Matthew Bourke and the Custodians of Francis Outlook to discuss what plants should be used to bird-scape the western boundary of Francis Outlook. On the day we will examine:

  • a draft project proposal for Francis Outlook

  • how to attract little birds to your backyard and

  • common weeds of the area and how to treat them

Location: Francis Outlook, Dewar Terrace, Corinda

Date and Time: Sunday 15th June, 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm

This project, “Bird-scaping Francis Outlook” is funded by the Brisbane City Council Environment grants. It will help raise awareness of little birds and how to attract them back into your suburb.

Flora Walk - Stable Swamp Creek

Join OCCA's David Sparks and Peter Michael as they traverse the Oxley Creek Common to find out what lies along the banks of the wild Stable Swamp creek.

Who: All are welcome

Where: Oxley Creek Common

When: Sunday 15th June 2008

Time: 9am -12am with BBQ lunch at 12.30ish

What to bring: Wear Sturdy shoes (Long sleeved shirt and trousers are advised as well...) Water, Sunscreen (if you are not time pressured), Field books and a Magnifying glass (if you have one).

  • Australia Post Community Development Grant

"Community groups, including local landcare groups across Australia, can now apply for yearly grants of up to $3,300 (including GST) to help improve their local community and environment, through the Australia Post Landcare Community Development Grants Program.

The grants can fulfil a community groups’ “wish list” and directly fund a community project, help buy much needed tools and equipment, or help raise awareness and encourage more community members to get involved. The flexibility in the allocation of funds aims to help groups in their ability to grow within the community. "

  • Dilmah Water Quality Funding

The ‘Best Tea, Best Water' Grants Programme is offering a new round of grants to community groups and schools to improve water quality in their local area. 

The Grants Programme is an initiative of Landcare Australia and its partner Dilmah Single Origin 100% Pure Ceylon Tea. Through the grants, landcare community groups and schools around Australia will now have better ability to monitor and improve the quality of their water in their local area.

Grants of up to $1,650 (inc GST) are up for grabs.  Schools and community groups are able to apply for the following: 

Water quality testing kits for community groups and schools

Water quality testing training

Water quality testing kit consumables and additions

Ecological Restoration Workshop - Cliveden Ave!

Oxley Creek Catchment Association invites you to a 3 hour workshop on the practical side on Ecological restoration. With case studies on Cliveden Ave Bushcare and Pennywort Creek Bushcare sites, this is your chance to ask questions, and learn all there is to know about Weed ID and treatment, Site planning and how to incorporate natural regeneration in your site. This workshop is the last in the series of ecological restoration in an urban catchment funded through the Exchange incentive grant.

 Where: Cliveden Ave reserve (UBD ref Map 198 R7)

Help OCCA plant over 1300 trees in November!

The Oxley Creek Catchment Association's Biodiversity services team needs your help! We are planting 1300 trees in the month of November, and all are welcome to help out. There are three planting events to choose from: 

 

  • 900 trees at the Spring Mtn Wetlands on Saturday November 10th at 7am. There is going to be a fish snapshot as well conducted by Beaudesert Shire Council.
  • 300 trees  at Greenwood Lakes on Saturday November 17th at 8am and again all welcome!
  • 150 trees at the Wat Thai Buddharam in Forestdale on Friday November 23

 

The sites have been prepped and are ready to be planted so bring yourself, your family and friends and enjoy a great start to the weekend.

All events include a FREE BBQ lunch!

Capture Nature through Your Fingertips

A Digital Photography Workshop for Beginners

Join the Oxley Creek Catchment Association on a nature digital photography workshop. See the Brisbane River, wetlands, flora and birds through your camera lens as you have never seen them before.

 Professional Brisbane photographer Tony Anderton (Sacred Life of Water exhibition, Riverfestival 2006, 2007) will guide you through some tricks of the trade and how to get the best out of your camera. The workshop continues with a group walk-in-the-field photography session with expert advice to direct you to the best photo opportunities and offer individual explanation as needed.

 The workshop guarantees a fun and educational time. It will be an excellent chance to learn more about nature and instil awareness for protecting our waterways and biodiversity, whilst getting to know your camera better.

 All participants are advised to wear comfortable outdoor footwear, bring sunscreen, insect repellent, hat and a water bottle. Adults with no photography experience are welcomed, but all participants must bring their own digital camera.

 The cost is $5 for OCCA Members $15 per non-OCCA member. Limited numbers are available so book now to secure your spot!

Spring Mountain Wetland Community Day

 

Learn about the unique fish and flora of Spring Mtn wetlands

 

Join Oxley Creek Catchment Association and Beaudesert Shire council as we plant 900 trees and conduct a fish snap shot at Spring Mountain wetlands.

 

 Free refreshments and BBQ lunch will be provided

Oxley Creek Flora Walk - Archerfield Wetland

The second in our series of walks through the catchment, the flora walk will focus on plant ID, from beginner to advanced. Hosted by David Sparks, OCCA's Field and Conservation Extension Officer, participants are sure to see a plethora of natives and weeds and many plants which will have us all stumped!
